How to Choose Your Materials
Steel
A wide range of tool steels and stainless steels can meet the requirements of virtually every application. Specific applications call for different qualities in tool steels — achieved by adding particular alloys with an appropriate amount of carbon. The alloy(s) in combination with carbon result in the right balance of wear resistance, toughness, and compressive strength for your process.
To determine the Right Tool Steel for your application, see our detailed guide.

Tungsten carbide grades offer varying combinations of hardness and toughness for different applications. From micro-grain carbides for cutting edges to high-cobalt grades for impact resistance, we help you select the optimal grade for your specific forming, stamping, or heading application.

PVD coatings provide excellent abrasion and galling resistance while maintaining substrate integrity. These coatings work best on high-speed tool steels (M-2, PM-M4, T-15) and select cold work grades tempered at or above 1,000°F. For interior contours and features where PVD line-of-sight is limited, nitriding provides case-hardening on all exposed surfaces.
Below is a list of standard surface treatments offered by GS Machining.
